アラーキーこと荒木経惟の新作写真展「荒木経惟 写狂老人Ａ」が、7月8日から東京オペラシティ アートギャラリーにて開催。
本展のために制作した新作とアーカイブ含む計1000点をこえる大規模な個展。「写狂老人A」のタイトルは、老境に入り一層精力的に制作を続けた画家・葛飾北斎が70代半ばで「画狂老人卍」と号したことになぞらえ、荒木自身を表している。
既に500冊を超える写真集を上梓している荒木は、そのテーマや手法が多岐にわたることでも知られている。近年、自らの「死」に直面するような数々の体験を経て、「生」を見つめる眼差しは鋭さと深みを増し、長年の重要なテーマである「生と死」がより鮮明に表現されている。

Ukiyo-e Master Hokusai called himself a ‘Picture crazy old man’ during a fervent period of creation in his 70’s. Photographer Araki takes this cue as the title for an exhibition at Tokyo Opera City which will display 1,000 works, both recent and from the 1960’s. Recent illnesses have focused 77-year old Araki’s work more than ever on the themes of life and death with the creator of over 500 photography books not slowing down in his output. THis exhibition coincides with an Araki retrospective opening July 25th at Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography.
