BOB Magazine is a popular monthly hair and make-up publication (named after the hair style, not a man). It’s high-style-mode-hair at it’s best, known by everyone within creative hair circles in Japan. Each issue they chose a leading Japanese Hair Stylist for a ‘My Style, My Life’ feature. For October 2012 they chose SHIMA Creative Director Nara Yuya. Whilst Yuya was responsible for the Hair and Make up, Joe (Tokyo Dandy) was the stylist for the shoot for which I was photographer. I like the way the boys styled the girls – ‘Hard Candy’ is a comment on how ‘kawaii’ doesn’t always have to mean ‘kitsch’. In Japan, specifically magazines, I find things to be either completely sexless or strangely hentai, two extremes for which we need to draw some balance. Models Omori Michi and Hisaka are cast in a kawaii sex-kitten scenes shot at Faline Harajuku whereas Nakao and Minami are Noir-esque Femma Fatales. Four images were used in the magazine (two of which with the cover above) and we have chosen four different photos to be featured here on Tokyo Dandy.
