One of China’s most prolific Artists, Cai Guo-Qiang lived in Japan between 1986 – 1995 and it’s where his life as a Artist began. ‘There and Back Again’ marks a return to his artistic roots, Cai’s first large scale solo exhibition in the country taking place at Yokohama Museum of Art.
Cai is known for his drawings made by the explosion of gunpowder, ephemeral events using fireworks and other media, and grand scale installations. By applying unconventional materials and dynamic techniques, he incorporates materials related to Chinese culture such as gunpowder and Chinese traditional medicine, and grounds his artworks in the philosophy of Feng Shui. This fusion of the Eastern world-view with the effect of spectacle in his artistic practice has received international acclaim.
This exhibition presents significant works produced in the recent years, which have never been shown in the country. As an artist who was born in China, studied in Japan, and currently lives and works in America, Cai’s work reveals a symbolic contrast and harmony of the Eastern philosophy and the Western values.
This exhibition features a new large-scale two-dimensional work which is going to be produced specifically in Yokohama, as well as installations including “Head On” that will debut in Japan. The new work will be created in Cai’s signature medium, igniting gunpowder on paper for which the subject will be selected through the artist’s research on the history and culture of the city.
A monumetal exhibition for both the Artist and Yokohama Museum of Art.
