1年を通して最も重要なイベントの1つ「MET GALA 2017」、オープンを祝して開催された華やかな祭典。
5月1日、ニューヨーク・メトロポリタン美術館に集まった世界中のセレブたち、アナ・ウィンターはもちろん、ケイティ・ペリー、ファレル・ウィリアムスをホストに多くの著名人が駆けつけた。日本からは、ニコラ・ジェスキエール率いるルイ・ヴィトンを纏ったモデルで女優の福島リラ、ヴィンテージのマルタン・マルジェラの衣装で登場した水原希子、そして、フィル・オー（Street Peeper）がシャッターを切ったコム デ ギャルソン・川久保玲の貴重なショット（当初彼女はインタビューでイベントには出席しないかもしれない語っていた）。
5月4日の一般公開に先駆け、1983年に開催されたイヴ・サンローラン展に続き、存命デザイナー2人目となった特別展「Rei Kawakubo / Comme des Garcons:Art of the In-Between」。メトロポリタン美術館のキュレーターとしてご存知アンドリュー・ボルトンによってキュレーションされたギャルソンのアートな空間、1980年代から2017年秋冬コレクションのウィメンズウェアを9つ（「Absence / Presence」「Design / Not Design」「Fashion / Antifashion」「Model / Multiple」「High / Low」「Then / Now」「Self / Other」「Object / Subject」「Clothes / Not Clothes」）のテーマに分けて展示された140点もの作品たち。40年以上のキャリアが今ここで認められ、いや認められなければならないからこそ実現した川久保玲＝コム デ ギャルソンのファンタジー。

There were a few familiar faces from Japan on the red carpet for the annual Met Ball, just as well as this years honouree is Japanese. Rila Fukushima was dressed in Louis Vuitton by Nicholas Ghesquire whilst Mizuhara Kiko took a turn in US Vogue’s film booth. Street Peeper / Vogue.com’s Phil Oh managed to capture a rare photo of Kawakubo as she snook into the party (she’d hinted in an earlier interview that she might not even attend).
We can take a look inside Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garcons ‘The Art of the In-between’ at The Met New York. Curated by Andrew Bolton, 150 creations are separated into the categories of Absence/Presence, Design/Not Design, Fashion/Antifashion, Model/Multiple, High/Low, Then/Now, Self/Other, Object/Subject, and Clothes/Not Clothes. As pictured, the exhibition is formed by simple white structures, a lot like one would expect to see at Dover Street Market. Rei herself avoids explaining her work, so it seems remiss to type at length in an attempt to do so here. What must be acknowledged is this extraordinary achievement, only the second living designer (after Yves Saint Laurent) to receive this honour, Rei Kawakubo is still very much a relevant and vital force today. All this as an Asian woman no less.
