9月16日よりニューヨークのFIT（ニューヨーク州立ファッション工科大学）ミュージアムにて行われているダフネ・ギネス（Daphne Guinness）の展覧会での一時。丁度1年前のこの時期には、日本のコンテンポラリー・ファッションにフォーカスをあてたエキシビションが同場所で行われていた。今年は … あのダフネ・ギネスの世界観が存分に詰まった数々の衣装たち。ギネス … ギネスビールはご存知ですよね？そう … あのギネスビールの一員ダフネ・ギネス。そんな彼女の1995年からこれまでに買い集めたクチュールドレスたちが展示されているのだ。なんと計100点ものクチュールドレスが展示されているほか、靴にジュエリー、そしてフィルム上映もされている。ラッキーだったわたしたちは、オープン前のガイド付きで案内して頂いたのだ。それにしても … あの地下鉄の妙な音には驚かされてしまった。展示されているブランドは、マックイーンにガレスピュー、シャネル、ディオール、トム・フォードなどなど。ニューヨークに行く機会があれば是非覗いてみるべし。

Whilst in New York last week we were able to take a tour of the Daphne Guinness exhibition currently taking place at the Fashion Institute of Technology. What’s interesting about the collection is the fact that all of the pieces are relatively new, the oldest dating from just 1995. Seeing the pieces on mannequins one was able to appreciate not only their fine detail but also consider the wearer and how she brings them to life. In a Gaga inspired world where some throw on everything they own and call it ‘fashion’ it was the simplicity that struck me. This was an opportunity to consider statement pieces as beautifully crafted artworks for which the human body and spirit is life blood, how remarkable clothes require remarkable people to wear them without looking like a clothes horse.
The exhibition was beautifully curated with a couple of video projections as well as a hologram hovering above the room, to which the rumbling subway beneath gave a certain Alexander McQueen like ambience. The Daphne Guinness Exhibition at the FIT runs through until January 7th 2012 and if you are in New York I recommend you take a look.
