熊本県阿蘇山の写真で始まる『DISPOSABLES』。使い捨て用品の誕生は国のそれらと似ている。人間が国家のイデオロギーを投影する物質学的基盤の象徴、火山。個人と国家のアイデンティティが「DISPOSABLES」の最も重要なテーマとする。

イギリス人写真家、ダン・ベイリー（Dan Bailey）初となる写真集『DISPOSABLES』の発売を記念して、10月12日 – 10月14日の期間、「ギャラリー月極」にてインスタレーションを開催。

初の写真集となる『DISPOSABLES』 ― 「はかなさ」への美意識が文化の本質を成す日本において、「使い捨て」のカメラに詩的感覚を見出したダン・ベイリーは、日常生活を記録する手段として10年前から使い捨てカメラを使い始めた本作は、江戸時代の浮世絵師歌川広重が制作した連作『名所江戸百景』に収められた119枚の風景画と同数の写真で構成されている。また本書では『名所江戸百景』のロケーションを踏襲するだけでなく、「浮世」に垣間見える神聖的且つ世俗的な情景のコントラストも題材にしている。

人間が国家のイデオロギーを投影する地質学的基盤の象徴、火山。そんな火山の写真で始まる『DISPOSABLES』は、季節と伝統を通じて継承される通過儀式や都内のナイトクラブといった情景を背景に、日本文化と国民意識を感受するための意識の旅、そのものである。

It’s been a long time coming and I am delighted to final announce the release of my first book… DISPOSABLES

‘DISPOSABLES is the first photo book by British-born Dan Bailey, a 16-year resident of Japan. Bailey began to use disposable cameras 10 years ago as a way to capture snapshots of daily life while finding a profound sense of poetry to their ‘disposability’ in a country where awareness of transience is an intrinsic part of the culture.

Bailey selected 119 images for the book – the same number of plates in ukiyo-e artist Utagawa Hiroshige’s 19th century series ‘One Hundred Famous Views of Edo’. DISPOSABLES not only finds commonality with some of the locations seen in that body of work but also in the the themes and scenes that contrast the sacred and profane in the ‘Floating World’.

Opening with a volcanic landscape representing the geological bedrock onto which humans project the ideologies of a nation, DISPOSABLES journeys through seasons and traditions via ancient rites of passage and inner-city nightclubs in a meditation on Japanese culture and national identity.

Following a release party on Friday October 11th, an installation expanding upon the ideas and themes explored in the book will be held from October 12th – 14th at Gallery Tsukigime.’
