ユニークで魅力的なグラフィティを手掛ける「FAFI」という名の1人の絵描き！フランス・パリを中心に活動するグラフィティアーティスト。ポップでちょいセクシーなあのキャラクター。これまで数々のブランドとコラボし、独特なイラストを世に送り出してきた「FAFI」。そんな彼女と原宿にショップを構える「FALINE TOKYO」のオーナー「BABYMARY」のストーリー！
初のコミック本「The Carmine Vault（ザ・カーマイン・ヴォルト）」（Rizzoli出版）のサイン会のために東京を訪れたFAFI。会場は原宿に店を構えるFALINE TOKYO。オーナーBABYMARYをはじめファリーンキッズたちはFAFIの世界を体現しており、会場にはここ以外考えられない。
そんなFAFIとBABYMARYに「The Carmine Vault」と「Fafinettes」について話を聞くことにした。
彼女はこれまでに本を出しているが、「The Carmine Vault」は初のコミック本として出版。今回の作品が今までとどう違うのか。
FAFI – 「私にとって本こそアートを見せる場所。だけど今回のコミック本にはストーリー性があるの。各ページ別々の作品が載っているのではなくて1冊で1つの世界を表現しているの。この作品をはじめ、もっと世界を広げていきたいの。こうやってキャラクターライセンスは商売していくのよ（笑）将来、私が筆を持たなくても誰かに、このキャラクターを書いて！この色を使って！って指示するだけでお仕事できるようにするのがゴールよ！」
FAFIの世界は間違いなく原宿ガールズたちのファッションを代表している。その中でも代表として言えるのがFALINEのオーナーBABYMARYとFAFIの長年の付き合い。何年かは長過ぎて記憶にないが。「10年くらい前だったかしら。YONEと一緒にストア・オープニングをした時にあなたとあなたのクルーを見たのを覚えてるわ。」とFAFIは言う。「それより前に、私の友達がCLARK MAGAZINEで働いててFAFIのデザインしたキャミソールだったかなんかのコレクションを雑誌の中で見て、ギャラリーがないかあなたのウェブサイトをチェックしたの。そしたらニューヨークのローワー・イーストにあったからいくつか買い物したわ。」とBABYMARY。
FAFI – 「そうそう！あの男にまだお金もらってないわ！」
BABYMARY – 「本当？！その時キャンバス2つくらい買ったのに！
まあ、それ以降自分で直接FAFIにコンタクトを取り始めたんだけどね。」
TD – FAFIのイラストはFALINEには欠かせないモノになってると思うんだけど、2人はどうやって一緒に仕事を始めたの？
BABYMARY – 勝手に使っちゃったの。笑
FAFI – YES!（爆笑）私はそれを知り彼女を捕まえたわ！使いたいならちゃんと私に聞いてからにしてっ！と彼女に伝えたわ！（笑）私にはルールが必要だったの！（1年間に3つね。みたいな）でないとキリがないから！（笑）でも結局良いエクスチェンジになったわね。こうやって私はFALINEでサイン会をしているのだから。
TD – FALINEにくる女の子はみんなFAFIの本に登場する「Fafinettes」のようなファッションに身を包んでやってくるけど、「Fafinettes」たちは実際に存在するのかな？モデルとかいるの？
FAFI – モデルとか実際に人物が存在するわけではないの。ただ私が描いている絵に多くのガールズたちが自分たちに似た「Fafinettes」を本の中から見つけ出すのよ。MARYは、セクシーでロマンチックな雰囲気だが、コミックに登場する「HULULU」は、BAD ASSなのよ。分かるかな！？
TD – 昨年マドモアゼル・ユリアのデビューシングル「GIMME GIMME」のミュージックビデオの監督を勤めたよね？どうだった？
FAFI – 彼女は完全に「Fafinettes（ファフィネッツ）」を具体化してくれた存在ね。撮影はパリで行われたんだけど、特に撮影内容を本人（マドモアゼル・ユリア）に伝えることはなかったわ。現場入りして巨大のセットに70人という大人数のエキストラに驚いたと思うわ。衣装はフランスを拠点に活動するアンドレア・クルーズが担当したのよ。とてもクールな一日だったわ。
Fafi, the foxy French illustrator, was in Tokyo Town over the weekend to sign copies of her first comic, ‘The Carmine Vault’ (published by Rizzoli). The location was Harajuku’s iconic FALINE store, where Fafi’s illustrations and ‘Fafinettes’ are embodied by store owner Baby Mary and the Faline Kids. We caught up with Fafi and Baby Mary to chat about how they first met, ‘Carmine Vault’ and Fafinetts worldwide.
Fafi said that this was her first comic, but she had done books before, I wondered what the difference was? Fafi explained ‘A book is where you put your art, but with this comic, there’s a story, it’s a realization of a whole world, not just individual works, this is the first volume of what I hope there will be many more’. Maybe this is the first step in Fafi’s world becoming a global character license business, Fafi half joked, ‘I hope someday I don’t even have to draw it, I just say to someone, ‘draw that character! Use that color”! That’s my goal’.
This world is definitely represented with the girls of Harajuku and in particular FALINE whose store manager Baby Mary Fafi has been friends with for a long time, although the exact details of how they met are quite sketchy ‘Around 10 years ago when I was here for a store opening with Yone, you were there with your crew’ remembered Fafi. Baby Mary remembers a bit further back, ‘Before that my friend was working for CLARK magazine in Paris, i saw a little advert for something Fafi was doing, like a collection of camisoles. I checked out her website to see if she had a gallery somewhere and found a place on the Lower East Side where I bought some stuff’,
Fafi, ‘Yeah I think that guy stills owe me money for that!’, ‘Really? I bought two canvas’! Anyway I contacted Fafi and started selling stuff from then myself.
TOKYO DANDY – For us Fafi’s illustrations are a big part of Falines image, how did you start working together on that?
Baby Mary ‘I just used it’
Fafi – (laughing) ‘YES! And I caught her! I said can you please ask me first! We need a system – like three pictures a year! I need rules because she has no limits! But it’s a good exchange, I get to come and do my signing here at Faline’
TD – At Faline, a lot of the girls look the the Fafinettes in the book, are they based on anyone in specific?
Fafi – ‘I don’t plan it like that but lots of girls find themselves in the drawings and characters form different times, the girls are a lot tougher then they were, Mary prefers the sexy more romantic ones, in the comic the Hululu, they’re really bad ass, they balance out the really feminine characters’
TD – Do you have girls like that in Paris?
No, actually, some girls do but it’s just a copy of the japanese girls – I feel like I’ve seen it more before. Japan has always been like that, the place where the trend is born but then has moved on by the time all the other countries are catching up.’
TD – You did Mademoiselle Yulias video for ‘Gimme Gimme’ last year, how was that?
She completely embodies the Fafinettes. She came to Paris and we had worked on the project without ketting her know exactly what we were going to do, so I think she was surprised by the size of the production. I got together 70 extras, got them all dressed up in Andrea Crews, it was s super cool day’
TD – And you’re going to DJ at the after party at VISION tonight?
FAFI – ‘Yes, I stopped Dj-ing because i was so bad, but for Mary tonight, just for 30 minutes we’re going to have fun, all the girls are coming, it’s going to be great’.
