遊興の別天地として繁栄した吉原。そのトップに君臨したのが花魁（おいらん）だった。花魁は現代でも繰り返し映画や漫画のヒロインになるなど、その浮世離れした魅力は時代を超えて人々を惹きつけている。

花魁といえばまず華やかなファッションが思い浮かぶが、江戸時代、花魁となるには美貌だけでなく、教養を備え、芸事にも秀でていることが必須。花魁のもとへは、武士や裕福な町人をはじめ当時の著名人も多く通い、彼らを中心として、吉原は文化サロンの様相を呈することもあった。セレブたちとの華麗な交流も注目の的ともなったことでしょう。一方で、彼女たちの置かれた過酷な境遇を理解する江戸の人々は、遊里を「苦界（くがい）」とも呼び、その中で生きる花魁たちを修行する達磨や悟りの境地に近い普賢菩薩に例えることもあった。
Harajuku’s Ota Memorial Museum, which is dedicated to the Japanese art form of wood block prints will hold an exhibition celebrating the fashions of Tokyo’s oldest red light district. The Yoshiwara flourished as a prominent pleasure quarter where notables from all areas of Edo (the old name for Tokyo) society came to visit the Oiran (Courtesans/prostitutes). This exhibition features Oiran’s fashion and their daily lives in the Yoshiwara through the wood block prints of famed Ukiyo-e Artists of the time.
