毎夏の興奮といえば、7月末に新潟県・苗場スキー場で開催された「FUJI ROCK FESTIVAL’18」。どこまでも続く余韻とともに振り返ってみよう。世界の関心がヒップホップアーティストたちに、初日のトリを飾ったN.E.R.D.にポスト・マローン、2日目のケンドリック・ラマー、そして最終日のグリーン・ステージでは、アンダーソン・パークのセクシーな歌声が会場中を虜に。とびきりの笑顔にエモーショナルなサウンド、凄腕のドラム叩きにコメディー調のキャラクターでピースフルな雰囲気に。
7月26日の前夜祭を含む、計125,000人が来場したフジロック（FUJI ROCK FESTIVAL’18）、28日の台風12号直撃で延期や中止の心配があったものの、アーティストを含む、会場に足を運んだ来場者たちは、持参のレイニーアイテムでなんとか強風を乗り切り最高の思い出をアップデート。
ハイライト？それはそれは、フジロック会場到着前に遭遇した野生猿との出会いに違いない。道を塞ぐ野生猿との出会いを後に、1日中和やかな雰囲気が漂う隠れた穴場スポット PYRAMID GARDENへ、ご存知 ジョニオさんこと UNDERCOVER のデザイナー高橋盾と HYSTERIC GLAMOUR の NOBUさんが奏でる洒落たサウンド。圧倒的に洗練されたケンドリック・ラマーのセットと強烈なインパクト、MGMTのメロディー、ローキーで歌うスーパーオーガニズムの混合した楽しさ（マインド）、Chaki Zulu が仕掛ける次世代のヒップホップクルー（下記ビデオクリップを）、そしてアンダーソン・パークの完璧すぎた日曜日。感染力のある彼のエネルギー、雲行き怪しかった空が1人の男の登場でガラッと自然光へと早変わり。フードコートではフィッユ＆チップスや本格ピッザを食し、Vegas in Milk で2018年最終日のフジロックを満喫して会場を後にした。SEE YOU NEXT YEAR 2019!
Excitement for Fuji Rock 2018 began to build early with the first artist announcements made back in February. A sway towards hip hop artists with headliners NERD / Post Malone (Friday), Kendrick Lamar (Saturday) and Anderson Paak (Sunday) reflected Japan’s growing interest in what is globally the most exciting pop cultural force in music. There were still plenty of home grown rock acts to keep the terrestrial rock crowd happy with Sakanaction and D.A.N. joining the legendary Bob Dylan and a well received Vampire Weekend closing proceedings on the Sunday.
Such a diverse lineup led to 3-day and 2-day ticket sellouts and a total weekend audience of 125,000 festival goers. This is all despite the threat of Typhoon 12 of the season, Jongdari hit the festival with strong winds and rain Saturday night but gave way to a beautifully sunny Sunday afternoon.
Our highlights? Monkeys blocking the road to the entrance upon arrival. Discovering the Pyramid garden where Undercover’s Jun Takahashi and Hysteric Glamour’s Nobu Dj’s beside and open fire and beneath a full moon. Kendrick Lamar’s sleek set and impactful visuals elevating a one-man act to main stage spectacle. The sense of joyful nostalgia in MGMT’s melodies, the unashamed quirkiness and fun of Super Organism, the Tokyo takeover of Chiaki Zulu’s Yentown crew in the red marquee (see video clips below), Anderson Paak’s perfect Sunday set where we believe his infectious optimism had something to do with brining the sun out. Fish & Chips in the food court. The after-parties until dawn at Vegas in Milk (see video clips below). SEE YOU IN 2019 !!!
