Tokyo’s Shimo Kitazawa neighbourhood is synonymous with live music, small bars and vintage stores – one of the most well known of which is Haight & Ashbury. Haight hosts an annual party for their loyal following of customers and ‘Haight Night; gives a chance to see how Tokyo’s youth are dressing. This particular tribe usually veers away from logo-centric contemporary street styles and as global brands put out collections with a curated thrift-store-find feel, these kids have immediate access to original pieces through scouring the cities amazing network of used stores. At Haight Night looks were toned down somewhat compared to recent years, for boys a simple white T’ was the most commonly worn piece with bleached hair and the occasional THRASHER T’. Whilst the style might have been tamer than recent years, the atmosphere was as hyped as ever, the music ranged from domestic J-Pop, J-Rock and punk to Hip Hop (no EDM here). Haight & Ashbury and it’s young customer base keeping the spirit of Shimo Kitazawa alive through connecting muisc, fashion and night life.
