広重の作品たちが太田記念美術館に集結、2018年は風景画の巨匠、歌川広重（1797〜1858）の没後160年にあたる。これを記念して太田記念美術館にて「歌川広重 各所江戸百景」展を開催する。
第1弾となる本展では、「浅草金龍山」や「亀戸梅屋舗」、「大はしあたけの夕立」など誰もが一度は目にしたことのある名品を含む「名所江戸百景」を展示する。本シリーズは、広重が亡くなるまでの3年を費やし制作した晩年の代表作、また目録と、弟子による作品を含めた120図からなる大作、前期後期に分けて全点を展観。
桜散る隅田川いん藤咲く亀戸天神、月下の猿若町に雪の浅草寺。今からおよそ160年前、広重は円熟した筆づかいで江戸の町をみずみずしく描写。しかし広重が没し、「名所江戸百景」の刊行がひと段落してからわずか10年後、日本は元号を明治へと変え、「名所江戸百景」は明治時代以降、すさまじいスピードで様変わりする直前の江戸の姿を切り取っている。今と変わらぬ風景、失われた名所。これらを描き出した「名所江戸百景」は、幕末の江戸の空気を今に伝えるタイムカプセルとも言えるでしょう。

The Ota Memorial Museum in Harajuku will stage two exhibitions this year honouring Japanese Ukiyo-e Master Hiroshige. The first, open now, displays works from the Artists incomparable series, the ‘100 Famous Views of Edo’.
This hugely inspirational body of work is a masterpiece of Ukiyo-e and Japanese art. It was works from the collection of the Ota Museum that contributed to the beautifully made Taschen tome of the same name (see here).
