抜群に美しい北斎、ボストンから来日！
葛飾北斎（1760-1849）は江戸後期に浮世絵師として画界に登場してから90歳で没するまでの約70年間、常にあらたな画様式に挑んだ不撓不屈の画人。世界中で広く愛されている浮世絵版画の中でも、北斎の作品は特に人気があり、日本のみならず欧米にも熱心なコレクターや研究者が多く、世界各国の美術館に作品が収蔵されている。北斎は、米国のライフ誌が選んだ「この千年で最も重要な出来事・人物」に、唯一名前の挙がった日本人でもある。
本展は、日本が世界に誇る北斎の魅力に、世界屈指の日本美術コレクションで知られる米国・ボストン美術館の作品から迫る。北斎研究の第一人者・永田生慈氏の監修のもと、同館の珠玉の所蔵品の中でもおどろくほど色鮮やかな作品、他では見ることができない非常に珍しい作品など、特に優れた作品約140点を厳選して展示。想像をはるかに超えた「北斎」に、是非会場に足を運んでみるべし！

Hokusai is one of Japan’s biggest exports, his famous ‘Great Wave off Kanagawa’ is arguably one of the most famous images ever created. Hokusai’s woodblock paintings define the era of ukiyoe (The Floating World), a Japan long buried beneath concrete. SOme of the largest collections of Ukiyoe exist outside of Japan, and this one is visiting from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. From the press release…
