伝統的な西洋芸術の価値観を大きく揺るがし、20世紀の美術に衝撃的な影響を与えた作家のマルセル・デュシャン。
2部構成となる本展覧会「マルセル・デュシャンと日本美術」は、第1部「デュシャン 人と作品（The Essential Duchamp 原題）」と題した米国・フィラデルフィア美術館が企画・監修する国際巡回展で、同館所蔵の世界に冠たるデュシャン・コレクションより油彩画、レディメイド、関連資料・写真など約150点もの作品を展示。第2部「デュシャンの向こうに日本が見える。」展では、東京国立博物館の日本美術コレクションで構成、もともと西洋とは異なった社会環境の中で作られた日本美術の意味や、価値観を浮かび上がらせ、日本の美の楽しみ方を新たに提案しようとするもの。
フィラデルフィア美術館のデュシャン・コレクションが、自館以外でこのようにまとまって公開されるのは初めてで、日本美術と比べて見ることのできる大変貴重あ機会となっている。
この展覧会では、「芸術」をみるのではなく「考える」ことで、さまざまな知的興奮を呼び起こしてください。

The Tokyo National Museum presents the works of Marcel Duchamp alongside Japanese art and crafts in an exhibition opening today.
This exhibition project, an exchange between the Philadelphia Museum of Art in the USA and the Tokyo National Museum, explores the meaning of Japanese art and the aesthetic values it embodies. It also proposes new ways of appreciating the beauty of Japanese art before modern eras, which was created within a society very different from that of the West, by contrasting it with the achievements of the French-American artist Marcel Duchamp (1887–1968), who challenged the values of Western art much later.
