フランスのファッション誌「Purple Fashion Magazine（パープル ファッション マガジン）」の20周年を記念して11月30日よりTHE LAST GALLREYにてフォトエキシビションが開催されている。名付けて「“NOCTURNAL DREAM”Purple 20th Anniversary Show」。
1992年、エレン・フライスと雑誌を始めるよりずっと以前から僕は日本という国から常にインスピレーションを受けている。伝統的な日本の美、川久保玲、北野武、森山大道、新藤兼人、オノ・ヨーコなどの現代に生きるアーティスト達、70年代のアヴァンギャルド・アート・シーン。日本人が常に過激だが詩的な人生を表現しているところに魅了される。日本の出版の伝統、グラフィック・デザイン、そして美的感覚への執着はティーンエイジャーの頃読んだロラン・バルトのエッセイ「表徴の帝国」そのものだ。また日本は、大島渚の「愛のコリーダ」や荒木経惟の写真でも分かる様に、性的欲望に対して様々な魅力的な見解をもつ。初めて日本に行った時、僕は現代の日本を体現しているファッション・フォトグラファーやアーティスト達と一緒に仕事をしたかった。僕の大切な友達の一人である林文浩は、そんな僕に周りのクリエイティブ・コミュニティーを紹介してくれた。20年経った今、パープルのアニバーサリーを祝うにあたり、これまでに協力してくれたフォトグラファー達の作品を林文浩のギャラリーにてレトロスペクティブ的に展示するのはベスト・アイディアだと思う。また自分が撮ったワールドワイドなパープルコミュニティの写真を一部セレクトし、この20年間素晴らしい活動を続けてきた日本人フォトグラファー達の作品が集うこの場で一緒に展示が出来るのは光栄な事だ。

We posted yesterday on Purple Magazine’s Olivier Zahm’s Collaboration with Louis Vuitton. LV is also supporting Zahm’s current exhibition at ‘The Last Gallery’ which celebrates 20 years of Purple Magazine. Japanese photographers have always been featured within the publication and this exhibition celebrates their involvement by exhibiting works that have been published over the past two decades. In the words of Oliver Zahm himslef, ‘Japan has remained a constant source of inspiration for me, since before I started my magazine with Elein Fleiss in 1992. From the beauty of Japanese tradition to contemporary artists like Rei Kawakubo, Takeshi Kitano, Daido Moriyama, Kaneto Shindo, Yoko Ono and the whole ’70s avant garde art scene, Japan has always expressed a radical but poetic vision of life, which I was very attracted to. I also admired the Japanese tradition of publishing, the graphic design, and the obsession for aesthetics that Roland Barthes explored in his essay “Empire of Signs” which I read when I was a teenager. Japan also had a totally different and fascinating approach to sexuality through Nagisa Oshima’s famous film of In the Realm of the Senses, all the way to Nobuyoshi Araki’s pictures. When I first went to Japan, I really wanted to work with the fashion photographers and artists that, in my mind, were the extension of this modern Japan. Fumihiro Hayashi was one of my dearest friends, who introduced me to the creative community around him. Twenty years later, I think the best way to celebrate Purple’s anniversary was to bring together the photographers who contributed to the magazine over the years into a retrospective photo show at Fumihiro’s gallery. I’m also extremely happy to present a small selection of my pictures featuring the Purple community worldwide alongside these images from the Japanese photographers who have been so important to me over these past 20 years.’
