人々が愛を交わす様子を書き出した「春画」。「枕絵」や「笑い絵」などといい、平安時代や鎌倉時代には「偃息図（おそくず）」と呼ばれ、「小柴垣草紙」や「稚児之草紙」など、鎌倉時代に制作された作例が現在している。印刷技術の盛んでなかった時代には上層の人々だけが享受してきたが、江戸時代に入ると版画の普及によって庶民にまで広まっていった「春画」。
なんと、そんな「春画」の日本初となる本格的な展覧会が9月19日から東京・目白の永青文庫で開催される。当初は、2013年にイギリス・ロンドンの大英博物館にて開かれた「Shunga: Sex and Pleasure in Japanese Art」の日本巡回展として企画されていたが、性表現へのタブー意識から受け入れ先がみつからず、関係者が約3年かけて開催にこぎつけたとのこと。
版画のような印刷技術ではなく、人の手で線と色が書き出された書画を「肉筆」という。浮世絵師の春画だけではなく、徳川将軍や大名家の絵画制作を担った狩野派の作品も展示。
永青文庫の理事長で元首相の細川護熙は、5月21日開けれた記者会見で「春画は日本の芸術の大きな花の一つ。これまで日本での展示は難しかったが、そういうタブーは破っていかないといけない」と述べた。国内外から集めた肉筆約30点を含む計120点もの作品を展示。

Back in 2013 we reported on a large scale exhibition of Japanese ‘Shunga’, the erotic sub genre of Edo-era woodblock printing works, that took place at the British Museum. This same exhibition is making its way home for the first of it’s kind here in Japan at the Eisai-Buno Musuem. Director of the Museum, Former Prime Minister Morihiro Hosokawa, stated in a press conference that up until now such an exhibition would have been considered taboo, but attitudes have changed and the works can now be viewed as ‘Art’. Reading between the lines – the highly repsected institution that is the British Museum has set the standard for Shunga as Art which has made it acceptable for the Japanese to now do the same.
