スペインで生まれ、現在はメキシコを拠点に活躍する写真家、クリスティーナ・デ・ミデルの日本初となる個展「This is what hatred did」が、9月27日よりIMA Galleryで開催される。
2011年に自社制作した写真集「The Afronauts」が世界中で話題を呼び、2013年にはドイチェ・ベルゼ写真賞にノミネートされ、いまもっとも注目される写真家のひとり「クリスティーナ・デ・ミデル」。彼女の作品の特徴は、ドキュメンタリーとフィクションの間をつなぐ独自の着眼点と綿密に作り込まれた幻想的なイメージ。新作「This is what hatred did」は、エイモス・チュツオーラによる幻想小説「My Life in the Bush of Ghosts（邦題：ブッシュ・オブ・ゴースツ）」をもとにした意欲になる。
アフリカを舞台として「ブッシュ・オブ・ゴースツ」は、兵士たちの攻撃を受けた村を逃げ出し、ゴーストでいっぱいのブッシュ（薮）に迷い込んだ少年の物語。少年は森で30年もの間過ごしながらも、故郷に帰ろうとする。主人公は何度も生死を繰り返し、牛、馬やその他の動物に返信し、金銀ブロンズや蛇、カタツムリを食べながらゴーストがいっぱいの不思議なブッシュを生き続ける。
そんなデ・ミデルは、この幻想的なストーリーを写真で表現するためにドローイングを描き、実現するための場所としてラゴスのスラム街であるマスコをチョイス。「This is what hatred did」では、物語をベースにしながらも、フォトジャーナリストとしてマスコという場所をドキュメントしている。

Spanish Photographer Cristina de Middel’s acclaimed debut ‘The Afronauts’, a magical body of work inspired by the true story of Zambia’s 1960s failed space program. Having produced the work without having been to Africa, the success of the book lead to Middel receiving many abook reference for further reading on the continent. One of these books was was Amos Tutuola’s ‘My Life in the Bush of Ghosts’, the inspiration for her next work, ‘This is What Hatred Did’, which sees the Documentary Photographer’s first exhibition in Japan at IMA Gallery.
