約2年に及ぶ大規模改修工事を終え9月にリニューアルオープンする東京都写真美術館「トップミュージアム」が、総合開館20周年記念として「杉本博司ロスト・ヒューマン」展を9月3日より開催する。

杉本博司は1970年代からニューヨークを拠点とし、〈ジオラマ〉〈劇場〉〈海景〉などの大型カメラを用いた精緻な写真表現で国際的に高い評価を得ているアーティストで、近年は歴史をテーマにした論考に基づく展覧会や、国内外の建築作品を手がけるなど、現代美術や建築、デザイン界等にも多大な影響を与えている。本展では人類と文明の終焉という壮大なテーマを掲げ、世界初発表となる新シリーズ＜廃墟劇場＞に加え、本邦初公開＜今日 世界は死んだ もしかすると昨日かもしれない＞、新インスタレーション＜仏の海＞の3シリーズを2フロアに渡って展示し、作家の世界観、歴史観に迫る。
同時に、1955年にオランダのアムステルダムで、世界報道写真財団が発足したことにより、翌年から始まったドキュメンタリー報道写真の展覧会で、1月から2月にかけて主に前年に撮影された写真を対象にした「世界報道写真コンテスト」が開かれ、国際審査員団によって入賞作品が選ばれる。そんな「世界報道写真展2016」も同時期に開催され、60年代に日本を飛び出しNYで名を馳せた前衛芸術家の草間彌生。そして、70年代アジア人初のトップモデルとしてパリで大活躍した山口小夜子。世界を舞台に闘った2人の日本人女性との出会いは、「世界が魅せられた ふたりの異才 草間彌生×山口小夜子」と題した松本貴子監督によるドキュメンタリー特集。
Having being closed for renovations for the past 2 years, the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum will reopen this September. ‘Lost Human Genetic Archice’ by Photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto will be the first exhibition to take place in the site. This exhibition will occupy two floors of the museum; dealing with the epic theme of ‘the demise of mankind and civilisation’, it consists of three bodies of work: the world’s first showing of his latest series, ‘Abandoned Theater’, the first Japanese showing of his ‘Lost Human Genetic Archive’ and a new installation work entitled ‘Sea of Buddhas’, which together present the artist’s view of history and the world. The exhibition will also include the world’s first showing of the photographic work, ‘Abandoned Theater’. This is a new series that evolved from the ‘Theaters’ series that he has worked on since the 1970s. See full information as to the exhibitions contents here.
Also part of the opening schedule, ‘World Press 2016’ looks back on the past year of award-winning reportage from around the world. Two documentaries by Director Takako Matsumoto will be shown in the screening room, the look at 2 unique Japanese ‘geniuses who have captured the world’, model Sayoko Yamaguchi and Artist Yayoi Kusama.
The Tokyo Photographic Art Museum is part of the Yebisu Garden Place complex. Formerly known as the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, the building was in dire need of renewal, the exhibition halls felt like office corridors with bad lighting and dirty carpets. Let’s hope the revitalised institution can capture the spirit that makes Japanese photography so popular around the world.
