日本が世界に誇る浮世絵は、江戸時代の初期に始まり、歌麿、写楽、北斎、広重などのスター絵師の活躍や、強烈なインパクトを放つ国芳らの登場を経て、小林清親や橋口五葉などの近代の画家に引き継がれました。
本展は、浮世絵研究の成果を世界に発信している「国際浮世絵学会」の創立50周年を記念して、浮世絵の名品を日本国内および世界各地から一堂に集めるものです。好事家ならずとも目にしたことのある代表的な作品約430点により、浮世絵の全史を通覧します。まさに浮世絵の“教科書”、“国際選抜”となる展覧会です。（東京会場には約350点が展示されます。展示替あり。）
会場では、“浮世”を初めて絵画の題材として取り込んだ江戸時代初期の風俗図屏風を筆頭に、菱川師宣の初期浮世絵から、歌麿・写楽が登場した「黄金期」、北斎・広重・国芳が活躍した「展開期」、そして文明開化に沸く明治時代の新聞錦絵、橋口五葉が描いたモダンな女性まで、時代を追ってご紹介します。版画だけでなく、肉筆画も多数展示するとともに、大首絵、役者絵、相撲絵、上方絵などの浮世絵が持つ多彩なジャンルも網羅します。浮世絵の全貌を紹介し、その魅力を再認識していただく展覧会です。

The Edo-Tokyo Musuem is a favorite of mine, a monstrous museum by the banks of the Sumida River beside the National Sumo Arena. Imagined at a time when Japan had unimaginable wealth and completed at a time when the bubble had burst, the building itself is a testament to the boom and bust culture of Japan. Despite the modern exterior inside is a wealth of artifacts and interactive exhibits charting the history of this here fine city. It’s definitely worth a visit, especially when a special exhibition such as the current overview of Ukiyo-e which is taking place right now…
‘The masterpieces of Ukiyo-e, including representative pieces by Sharaku, Hokusai and Hiroshige, will be collected from Japan and all across the world for exhibition to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the foundation of International Ukiyo-e Society, which transmits the results of research on Ukiyo-e to the world. Around 340 of works on exhibit will cover entire history of Ukiyo-e. The exhibition is somewhat like a school textbook that introduces Okubi-e, Yakusha-e, Kamigata-e and landscapes.’
