フィンセント・ファン・ゴッホ（1853-1890）は、パリ時代からアルル時代前半にかけて、浮世絵や日本に関する文献を集めるなど、日本に高い関心を寄せてきた。一方で、ファン・ゴッホの死後、日本の芸術家や知識人が、この画家に憧れ、墓のあるオーヴェール=シュル=オワーズを巡礼していたことが明らかとなった。本展では、ファン・ゴッホの油彩画やデッサン約40点、同時代の画家の作品や浮世絵など約50点に加え、関連資料を通して、ファン･ゴッホと日本の相互関係を探り、その新たな魅力を紹介。

Vincent van Gogh, The Sower, 1888, Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam
Yesterday I visited the Van Gogh & Japan exhibition being held at the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum in Ueno Park. The landmark showing of the Dutch Masters work is traveling through Japan before finishing at the Van Gogh Museum in The Netherlands.
Van Gogh and Japan details the influence Japanese art, in particular woodblock prints, had on the work of the painter. Many classic examples of Ukiyo-e by greats such as Hiroshige and Hokusai are displayed alongside Gogh’s work to demonstrate the aesthetic similarities. Held over three floors of the museum, the look into the relationship gets personal displaying Gogh’s own collection of Ukiyo-e prints, as well as guest books detailing the Japanese visitors he received. The irony, in a room full of priceless paintings by an artist that died poor, is that Van Gogh himself never visited Japan. Van Gogh & Japan will be in Tokyo juntil january 8th 2018 before moving on to Kyoto and finally Amsterdam.
