浮世絵から妖怪ウォッチまで、4000年にわたる妖怪物語「大妖怪展」が、東京と大阪で開催される。
妖怪は、日本人が古くから抱いてきた、異界への恐れや不安感、まだ”身近なもの”を慈しむ心が造形化されたもの。本展では、縄文時代の土偶から、平安・鎌倉時代の地獄絵、中世の絵巻、江戸時代の浮世絵、そして時代の「妖怪ウォッチ」まで、国宝・重要文化財を含む一級の美術品を紹介。これまでの妖怪展とは一線を画す、江戸の化け物、そして現代の妖怪、4000年の妖怪たちが大集合する。

Monsters, spirits and demons make up the word of ‘Yokai’, stories about which have terrified and entertained Japan for centuries. A large scale exhibition brings these spectres to the public at Tokyo’s Edo Museum this Summer before moving to Osaka. From clay statues of the Jomon period to Edo screen prints right up to today’s most popular anime, ‘Yokai Watch’, “Yokai in the Arts of Japan’ promises to uncover the unique world of Japanese supernatural stories and characters.
